As India adds millions of EVs to its roads, the power grid faces a challenge and an opportunity. Unmanaged EV charging can strain distribution networks and cause localized outages. But intelligently managed charging, integrated with grid signals, renewable generation, and dynamic tariffs, can actually strengthen the grid while reducing costs for everyone.
If every EV owner plugs in when they arrive home at 7 PM, the evening demand peak, already the highest point of the day, gets a significant additional load. A neighbourhood with 50 EVs charging simultaneously at 7.4 kW adds 370 kW to the local transformer, potentially exceeding its rating.
This 'coincidence factor', the percentage of chargers active simultaneously, determines whether the grid needs expensive upgrades. Without management, coincidence factors can reach 70-80%. With smart charging, they drop to 20-30%, deferring billions in grid infrastructure investment.
Smart charging shifts EV demand to times when the grid has surplus capacity, typically late night to early morning. The charger receives signals from the grid operator or energy management system and adjusts its power output accordingly. Drivers set their departure time and minimum charge requirement; the system handles the rest.
RIOD's chargers support OCPP smart charging profiles that enable remote power adjustment by the backend system. Grid operators can send demand response signals through the CPMS, which distributes power reduction commands across the charger network based on priority rules.
India's solar generation peaks between 10 AM and 3 PM, when many EVs sit in office parking lots. Aligning workplace charging with solar peaks reduces grid dependency and absorbs renewable energy that might otherwise be curtailed.
RIOD's energy management platform integrates with solar inverter APIs to monitor real-time generation. When solar output is high, the system automatically increases charging power across connected EVs. When clouds reduce output, it throttles back gracefully, all invisible to the vehicle owner.
