UPI Autopay for EV Charging Subscriptions

Recurring charging plans need a recurring payment method. In India, that means UPI Autopay: a mandate the driver approves once, that debits automatically for their monthly plan until they cancel it.

Here's what UPI Autopay makes possible for EV charging subscriptions.

UPI Autopay for EV Charging Subscriptions

Subscription models that work

Apartment resident plans: fixed monthly fee for a defined kWh allowance at the building chargers. Autopay debits on the same date each month. Overages billed separately at a per-kWh rate.

Fleet driver quotas: owner-driver fleets where the driver pays a monthly fee for a fixed amount of charging at fleet-partner sites. Autopay handles the fee; driver interacts with the charger normally.

Wallet auto top-up: driver's charging wallet is auto-topped-up when it drops below a threshold, funded by Autopay. Session payments continue to feel like prepaid.

How the mandate works

The driver approves an Autopay mandate once in their UPI app: 'RIOD Charging can debit up to Rs X per month.' The mandate has a defined maximum and a defined frequency; drivers can revoke any time.

On the scheduled date, the platform debits the mandate. Success: subscription continues. Failure (insufficient balance, revoked mandate, expired card): dunning process kicks in, retry a few times, notify the driver, eventually suspend the plan.

RBI mandate limits

The RBI recurring-payment framework has evolved several times. Current limits: single mandate up to a defined ceiling per debit; higher limits require additional factor authentication per debit. Verify the current cap at build time; it changes.

Charging subscriptions typically fit well within the standard cap. High-value fleet plans might need a different structure (multiple lower-value debits, or a corporate credit line instead of Autopay).

Autopay mandate fields

  • User identity and linked UPI ID
  • Maximum debit amount per cycle
  • Debit frequency (monthly, weekly, custom)
  • Mandate validity window
  • PSP mandate reference for reconciliation
  • Cancellation status and audit trail

Subscription models Autopay unlocks

  • Apartment monthly resident plan with fixed kWh allowance
  • Fleet driver quota with monthly ceiling
  • Wallet auto top-up when the driver's balance drops below a threshold
  • Corporate allowance funded by the employer, consumed by employees

Regulatory note on limits

RBI and NPCI update UPI Autopay mandate rules periodically, including per-transaction caps and the additional-factor authentication threshold. This article intentionally does not quote a specific number; check the current NPCI and RBI circulars at build time and verify with your payment gateway before setting mandate limits in production.
