Origin is a useful proxy for some things and a poor proxy for others, and buyers routinely use it for the second category.
Being manufactured locally reliably changes lead time, spares logistics and how quickly someone can reach a failed unit. It does not by itself indicate quality, engineering depth or whether anyone at the supplier understands the product they are selling.

What local manufacture genuinely changes
- Lead time, because there is no shipping cycle between order and delivery
- Spares availability, usually held domestically rather than shipped per incident
- Service reach, if the manufacturer has field presence rather than only a factory
- Design fit to local grid conditions, if the product was actually designed here
- Eligibility where local content requirements apply to procurement
What it does not tell you
Origin says nothing about whether the design is good, whether the firmware is maintained, whether protocol behaviour has been tested, or whether the company that assembles the unit understands what is inside it.
A locally assembled charger built from an imported design, by a company with no engineering function, offers the logistics benefits and none of the engineering ones. That configuration is common and is worth identifying before it is bought.
The question underneath the question
What buyers usually want when they ask about origin is: if this fails in eighteen months, can someone who understands it help me quickly. Local assembly is weak evidence for that. Local design and firmware ownership is strong evidence.
Asking who wrote the firmware separates the two faster than asking where the unit was built.
Grid conditions are a real design input
Voltage variation, earthing arrangements and supply stability differ enough between markets to affect protection design. Equipment specified for a more stable supply does not always cope, and this is a genuine argument for local design rather than for local assembly.

What most people get wrong about this
The market describes localization as extremely complex. In our experience it is not, and the reason people think otherwise is that they are solving the wrong problem.
OCPP support inside the charger is a small part of the work. It gets most of the attention because it is the part with a version number attached, so it is the part that is easy to specify and easy to argue about. The real problem is operational interoperability: whether the unit does the right thing with the site, the supply, the vehicle and the platform, repeatedly, over years. That is not a messaging question and no protocol version answers it.
Programmes that treat localization as a communications exercise get a charger that talks correctly and behaves badly. Programmes that treat it as an operational exercise find the actual work is ordinary: qualifying suppliers, building test systems, controlling revisions, and training people. Difficult to do carelessly, not difficult to understand.
