7.4 kW is the practical ceiling of a single-phase supply in most markets, which is why it dominates home charging and disappears above it.

The rating is not a product decision so much as a consequence of the supply. Understanding what sets it explains both why home charging clusters here and why going faster usually means a different connection rather than a different charger.

Where the number comes from

It is single-phase voltage multiplied by the current the circuit and the charger are rated to carry continuously. Push the current higher and you are into cable, protection and supply territory that most domestic connections do not support.

This is why the figure appears across manufacturers with only minor variation. It is set by the supply rather than by design ambition.

What it delivers in practice

Energy added depends on how long the vehicle is connected, which for home charging is usually overnight. For the great majority of daily driving patterns, an overnight connection at this rating replaces considerably more than a day's use.

That is the reason faster home charging is rarely worth its cost. The constraint on a home charger is not speed; it is how long the car sits there, and it sits there all night.

What to check before specifying

  • Whether the supply has headroom for continuous load alongside existing demand
  • Whether load management is needed so the charger yields to other appliances
  • Earthing arrangement, which affects protection requirements
  • Cable route and mechanical protection where vehicles move
  • Whether the unit works without an app or network, since connectivity fails

The last one matters more than buyers expect. A charger that will not deliver energy when the network is down converts an internet outage into a vehicle that did not charge.

The RIOD position

POWERPOD74 is a shipping single-phase 7.4 kW platform. Type 2 socket ships; tethered is configurable. Wall mount ships; pedestal is a configurable accessory. Wi-Fi, 4G and BLE ship. Per-charger current limiting ships, and site-wide dynamic load management runs through the RIOD CMS.

Ingress protection is typically IP65 and can be adapted to the deployment. Metering is Class 1 accuracy, with third-party meters supported where a project requires them.

Where 7.4 kW actually earns its place

This is the volume rating in AC charging, and the reason is behavioural rather than technical. It matches how long cars are actually parked.

Apartments are the clearest case. They show the highest utilisation of any AC site we operate, concentrated overnight, and a car sitting from evening to morning has twelve hours to take what it needs. Nothing about that argues for more power. What it argues for is more points, and a way of keeping their combined load out of the building's evening peak.

Two features decide whether an installation works, and neither of them is the power rating.

    A schedule

    So charging can be held out of the building's evening peak, run at reduced current through it, and completed across the hours afterwards. A car parked from seven to seven does not care which of those hours the energy arrived in.

    Local operation

    So a basement with no mobile signal can still authorise and run a session. Without it the charger fails intermittently, and residents experience that as unreliable equipment.

Why this is the one most people should buy

7.4 kW single phase is the rating that fits the largest number of vehicles on the road. Most cars cap their AC intake at or below it, which means a 7.4 kW point delivers everything the vehicle will accept and a larger one does not deliver more.

It is also our most-sold model, and that is not a coincidence. It matches how cars are actually parked: overnight at home or in an apartment, all day at a workplace, hours at a destination. In every one of those the constraint is dwell time rather than power, and dwell time is generous.

Charging without internet

Basement and podium parking is where mobile signal disappears, and a charger that needs a backend to authorise a session is a charger that fails there intermittently. Residents experience that as unreliable equipment rather than as a connectivity problem.

Our 7.4 kW community model runs without internet. Users are created and managed locally, sessions authorise locally, and billing is produced monthly from what the unit recorded. It reconciles when a connection is available and it does not need one to work.

For an apartment basement this is usually the deciding feature, ahead of anything about power.
