Bay economics invert
A pump serves many vehicles an hour. A charging bay serves few. Revenue per bay hour from energy alone is therefore lower, and the case usually depends on what the waiting customer buys.
The supply requirement is the real barrier
Forecourts historically need modest electrical supply. Fast charging demands a great deal, and the connection upgrade frequently exceeds the cost of the chargers and sets the timeline.
The waiting customer is the opportunity
Fuel customers leave in minutes. Charging customers stay, and what is available to them during that time determines whether the site earns more than the energy margin. Sites with a shop and seating do considerably better than sites without.
Occupancy after charging completes
A vehicle left in a bay after finishing blocks the highest-value asset on the site. Idle policy and enforcement matter more here than at destination sites, because bay turnover is the whole business.
Reliability is visible
A driver who stops specifically to charge and finds a broken unit has a worse experience than one who finds a busy pump. Uptime and session success carry more weight here than at sites where charging is incidental.
The forecourt model is the one place our position inverts
We argue almost everywhere that availability beats power, because most charging happens where the car was going to be parked anyway. A forecourt is the exception and it is worth saying so plainly.
Drivers do not park at a fuel station. Dwell time is short by design and the entire site economics depend on throughput, which means power per bay genuinely matters here in a way it does not in a car park or an apartment basement.
What does carry across is everything about the platform. A forecourt operator will run these assets for a decade, and the ability to change management platform remotely is worth more than any feature comparison. We resold a shared platform once where the change that finally had to be made was deployed by visiting every charger in the field. On a forecourt network that is not an inconvenience, it is a programme.
