EV Charging Feasibility Study Services

A feasibility study that concludes a site is viable, without stating what the viability depends on, has not told you anything you can act on.

Most sites are viable under some set of assumptions. The useful output is which assumptions carry the conclusion, and what happens to the case when each one moves.

What gets assessed

DimensionThe binding question
Electrical capacityHow many bays fit inside the measured headroom?
DemandWho charges here, how often, and for how long?
Charger mixAC, DC or both, and at what ratio?
Civil and layoutTrenching, bay access, protection, signage, accessibility
ApprovalsWhat permission is needed and how long does it take?
Operating modelWho runs it, bills for it and fixes it?
ReturnUnder which utilisation and tariff does it work?
02

Demand is the weakest assumption

Electrical capacity can be measured. Civil constraints can be surveyed. Demand is forecast, and it is where most charging business cases are optimistic.

A study that presents a single utilisation figure is hiding the risk. The honest form states the utilisation at which the site breaks even and lets you judge whether that is plausible for the location.

03

Charger mix follows dwell time

Dwell time decides the technology more than vehicle capability does. Where vehicles sit for hours, AC delivers more energy per pound of capital and per kilowatt of supply. Where they sit for minutes, only DC is useful. Sites with both patterns need both, in a ratio the dwell distribution sets.

04

Approvals and timelines

Supply upgrades, wayleaves and local permissions frequently determine the schedule more than procurement or installation. Establishing the approval path early prevents a project that is technically ready and administratively stalled.

05

What the study concludes

A recommendation with its conditions attached: the bay count and mix, the supply position, the sensitivities that move the case, the break-even utilisation, and the decisions that must be taken before commitment. Where the honest conclusion is that a site does not work, it says so.

06

The question that changes the answer

Feasibility usually turns on supply headroom, and supply headroom is usually assessed against simultaneous demand. That assumption does most of the work in the conclusion, and it is frequently wrong.

Where dwell time is long, the load can be moved. Apartments are the clearest case: highest utilisation of any AC site we operate, concentrated at night, and almost entirely schedulable because the vehicle is not going anywhere until morning. A site that fails feasibility against simultaneous demand can pass comfortably against scheduled demand.

Connectivity is the second assumption worth testing early. Basement and podium parking is where mobile signal disappears, and a design that needs a backend to authorise a session will not survive there. Our units keep charging and access control working locally with no internet and reconcile when the connection returns, which turns a blocking constraint into a configuration choice.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a site unviable?

Usually supply headroom that cannot be economically increased, or a dwell pattern that does not match any charger technology. Demand that is merely uncertain is a risk to price rather than a reason to stop.

Should we install AC or DC?

Dwell time decides it. Hours favour AC on both capital and supply. Minutes require DC. Mixed patterns need a mix, in a ratio the dwell distribution sets.

Do you forecast demand?

We state the utilisation at which the site breaks even rather than presenting a single confident forecast. That lets you judge plausibility for the location instead of inheriting our assumption.

How long does approval take?

It varies by supply position and jurisdiction, and it frequently sets the schedule. Establishing the path early is more valuable than estimating the duration.

Will you tell us if a site does not work?

Yes. A study that concludes everything is viable is not a study.
