Plug & Charge for every EV
Most cars on the road charge on AC with no digital identity, so every session starts with a tap. This paper explains how an OBD-based key gives those cars secure, automatic Plug & Charge without any change to the vehicle.

AC charging has no identity
On AC, the charger knows a car is plugged in. It never knows which car. ISO 15118 fixes this, but it needs hardware most cars don’t have. The common shortcut, matching the car’s MAC address, can be copied and replayed in under 10 seconds.
Inside the paper
- Why AC charging has no identity
- Why MAC-based auto-charge is a security gap
- The global market and where charging energy really flows
- How OBD-based Plug & Charge works, step by step
- The security architecture and threat model
- How four session-start methods compare
- The full RIOD charging stack: ISO 15118, OCPP 2.0.1, Charger360 and energy optimisation
Key takeaways
- AC is where most EV energy flows, and it’s exactly where Plug & Charge is missing.
- MAC-based auto-charge removes the tap but leaves an identity anyone can clone.
- An OBD key brings ISO 15118-class security to cars that don’t support it, over standard OCPP 2.0.1.
Who it’s for
Carmakers, charge point operators, charger manufacturers and fleet operators who want plug-in-and-go charging on the cars already on the road.
