Service and Technical Panel Opening

Opening a charger exposes live conductors. On an unattended site, that can be an engineer doing scheduled work, a contractor who was never told the procedure, or a person who should not be there at all, and from a dashboard those three look identical unless something is watching.

Why panel opening is worth detecting, how it is sensed, distinguishing authorised work from unauthorised access, what should happen automatically when a panel opens on a live unit, and the audit trail that becomes important only after something has gone wrong.

Why this matters more than it sounds

  • Safety. An open enclosure on a live unit is an exposure, and the operator carries responsibility for equipment they own whether or not they sent the person
  • Liability. After an incident, the question is who had access and when. An answer of we do not know is the worst available
  • Unauthorised work. Contractors working on adjacent systems open things. Meter tampering happens. Neither is theft and both matter
  • Warranty. A unit opened by an unqualified person is a warranty conversation that needs evidence on both sides

How opening is detected

    Door and panel interlocks

    A switch that reports the enclosure state. Simple, reliable, and the only method that is unambiguous about the event itself.

    Fastener or latch sensing

    For enclosures where a full interlock is impractical, detecting that the fastening has been released.

    Orientation and vibration

    Indirect. Useful as corroboration, prone to false positives on its own, particularly on a site with traffic.

    Correlated electrical signature

    Some interventions leave a trace in what the unit measures. Not a detection method by itself; useful in reconstructing what happened.

A real interlock is the honest answer. Everything else is inference, and inference produces alerts nobody trusts.

Authorised against unauthorised

This is the design problem. A system that alarms every time an engineer opens a unit will be muted within a month, and a muted alarm protects nothing.

  • Tie the expectation to a work order. A panel opening at a site with an open job is expected; the same opening with no job is not
  • A maintenance window declared in advance, which is the low-technology version and works
  • Technician identification at the unit, which is the strongest and requires something at the unit to identify against
  • Everything else, alarm. The default for an unexpected opening should be an alert, not a log entry

The work order link is what makes this usable. Without it the system either alarms constantly or is switched off, and both outcomes are the same outcome.

What should happen automatically

There is a real tension here and it should be resolved deliberately rather than by default.

Stopping charging when a panel opens is the safe response and it interrupts a paying customer, possibly for a legitimate maintenance visit at a bay that was not being worked on. Not stopping leaves a session running while an enclosure is open. The reasonable position is that the unit being opened stops, the rest of the site continues, and the decision about what constitutes the unit is made at design time rather than argued about afterwards.

  • The affected unit stops charging and does not accept new sessions
  • The event is recorded with a timestamp before anything else happens
  • Alerts go out according to whether the opening was expected
  • Where a camera covers the location, it records from that moment
  • The unit does not return to service automatically on closing. An engineer confirms it

The audit trail

This is the part that has no value until it has a great deal of value, which is why it is usually not built.

  • Every opening and closing with a timestamp, retained long enough to cover an investigation months later
  • The work order or authorisation in force at the time, or the absence of one
  • Who, where identification exists at the unit
  • What the unit was doing before and after
  • Whether it was returned to service, by whom, and when

After an incident, this record is the difference between demonstrating that the operator managed its equipment responsibly and having nothing to say.

Should charging stop when a panel is opened?

The unit that was opened should stop and refuse new sessions. The rest of the site should continue. Stopping a whole site for a maintenance visit at one bay punishes customers for scheduled work.

How do you avoid alarming on every legitimate visit?

Tie the expectation to a work order or a declared maintenance window. Without that link the system alarms constantly and gets muted, which is the same as not having it.

Is an interlock necessary, or can it be inferred?

An interlock is the honest answer. Vibration and orientation sensing are useful corroboration and produce false positives on their own, which trains people to ignore them.

Should the unit come back automatically when the panel closes?

No. A person should confirm it is safe to return to service. Automatic restoration assumes the work was completed correctly.

How long should the audit trail be kept?

Long enough to cover an investigation that starts months after the event, which is when these questions are actually asked.

Can you say who last opened each of your chargers?

If the answer is no, that is the gap. It costs little to close and is expensive to be without after an incident.
