EV Charging Costs: What to Expect in India

One of the biggest reasons people switch to EVs is fuel cost savings. But how much does it actually cost to charge an EV in India? The answer depends on where you charge, when you charge, and what kind of charger you use. This article breaks down the real numbers.

EV Charging Costs: What to Expect in India

Home Charging Costs

Residential electricity rates in India range from Rs 3 to Rs 8 per kWh depending on the state, slab, and time of use. A typical EV with a 40 kWh battery costs Rs 120-320 to charge fully at home. If that gives you 250-300 km of range, your cost per kilometer is Rs 0.40-1.10.

Compare this to a petrol car that costs Rs 5-7 per kilometer for fuel. Home charging is 5-10x cheaper per kilometer than petrol, even at the highest residential electricity rates.

Public Charging Costs

Public AC chargers typically charge Rs 10-15 per kWh. DC fast chargers charge Rs 15-25 per kWh. Some operators add a parking fee or service charge on top. At Rs 20 per kWh on a DC fast charger, a full 40 kWh charge costs Rs 800. Still cheaper than petrol, but significantly more expensive than home charging.

  • AC public chargers: Rs 10-15 per kWh (slower, cheaper)
  • DC fast chargers: Rs 15-25 per kWh (faster, pricier)
  • Some networks offer subscription plans that reduce per-kWh rates
  • Government-subsidized chargers may offer lower rates in some locations

Time-of-Use Savings

Some electricity boards offer time-of-use (ToU) tariffs where nighttime electricity is 30-50% cheaper than daytime rates. If your utility offers ToU and you have a smart charger, you can schedule all charging between 10 PM and 6 AM and cut your charging costs significantly.

Even without official ToU tariffs, some states have lower slab rates for off-peak consumption. Check your electricity bill structure and set charging schedules accordingly.

Installation Costs

The one-time cost of installing a home charger includes the charger unit itself (Rs 25,000-1,50,000), installation labor (Rs 5,000-15,000), and electrical components like MCBs, RCDs, and cabling (Rs 3,000-10,000). Total upfront cost is typically Rs 35,000-1,75,000.

This investment pays back in 1-3 years through fuel savings for most drivers who were previously spending Rs 5,000-15,000 per month on petrol.
