OCPP 2.0.1: What Operators Need to Know

OCPP 2.0.1 is the latest version of the Open Charge Point Protocol, the global communication standard between EV chargers and central management systems. For charge point operators in India, understanding OCPP 2.0.1 is no longer optional; it's essential for interoperability, security, and future-proofing your network.

OCPP 2.0.1: What Operators Need to Know

What Changed From OCPP 1.6J to 2.0.1?

OCPP 2.0.1 introduces device management, improved security with TLS and certificate-based authentication, support for ISO 15118 (Plug & Charge), and a modular architecture that separates functional blocks like authorization, metering, and smart charging.

The protocol also adds support for bidirectional charging (V2G), display messaging, and local authorization management, features that were either absent or bolted on in OCPP 1.6J.

Why Indian Operators Should Care

India's EV charging market is growing rapidly, and multi-vendor networks are becoming the norm. OCPP 2.0.1 ensures that chargers from different manufacturers can be managed through a single backend, reducing vendor lock-in and simplifying operations.

The enhanced security model is critical for public charging networks handling payment data. With UPI and digital wallet integration becoming standard, the TLS encryption and certificate management in OCPP 2.0.1 protect both operators and consumers.

Migration Strategy

Operators running OCPP 1.6J networks don't need to replace hardware overnight. A phased migration, starting with new installations on OCPP 2.0.1 and firmware-upgrading compatible existing chargers, is the pragmatic path. RIOD's chargers support both OCPP 1.6J and 2.0.1, with cloud-managed firmware updates that simplify the transition.
